The gentleman in khakis seated on the right (thin on top) is the CO (when we went to Sasebo). I'm fairly sure the gentleman in khakis seated on the left is the XO. R.B.was quite a colorful character as anyone who knew him can attest! This photo was taken in August of 1969.

,Kenneth Strickland (SM2--2/69 to 2/70),frans@mail.tds.net

USS Satyr in 1969,Sunday 9-Jul-2000 07:07:07,207.1.8.57 writes, Just happened upon this site; sure brings back memories! On board in 1969 when the Satyr moved around between Dong Tam Long Xuyen Can Tho Chau Doc etc. Saw many familiar faces in PN Crawford's RVN photos but the names that go with those faces escape me. My days on the USS Whitfield County LST 1169 (also MRF) and the USS Satyr tend to run together in my mind. Gotta go dig out my letters written home; they're in a box in an attic about 100 miles from here! Haven't seen 'em in over three decades!

Best

Ken Strickland
,Kenneth Strickland SM2,frans@mail.tds.net

Maybe he was born there and lived in Texas. Anyway he was a fine fellow and easy going. I may go to people find and see if I can come up with an address for him. RM1 Wood's replaced him shortly before Japan (1970). Seems like I remember Cam Ranh Bay never giving us any problems with traffic. ,Bruce 70-71,trooper@usssatyr.com

American body in the water; first days in Viet Nam,Monday 27-Mar-2000 15:18:14,192.232.120.194 writes,Does anyone remember a time either the first full day of light or shortly after when a dead sailor came floating down the river? HIS HEAD HANDS AND FEET WERE MISSING AND I REMEMBER A BOAT WAS SENT OUT -THEY JUST SANK THE BODY AS THEY WERE AFRAID IT WAS BOOBY TRAPPED. IS THIS THE ONE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ? I THINK IT WAS DURING THE MONSOON SEASON 1970. I DON'T THINK IT WAS A SAILOR. ,,

Re: American body in the water; first days in Viet Nam,Wednesday 21-Jun-2000 07:48:23,192.232.120.194 writes,Thanks for the reply. After writing the original message I realized that I had never put any dates around when this happened. We arrived in July of 1968 and I believe the incident was about that time. I seem to remember it being the first morning after we went up river. Probably at Dong Tam and probably soon after we arrived. The body had been in the water awhile as it was bloated and floating. It was a wake up call to me as I had never seen anything like that.,Ron Chapman,
